Sunrise Departure Turns Fatal Over the Pacific — Final Minute of N157RC
A normal right-turn clearance after takeoff became a continuing turn and rapid descent into the Pacific within roughly one minute.
On the morning of the accident, N157RC departed over the Pacific. After contacting departure control the pilot was instructed to turn right to 255° and climb to 8,000 ft. Radar initially showed the expected right turn. Instead of rolling out on the assigned heading, the airplane continued turning toward the north and then descended rapidly. There was no further radio transmission. The NTSB determined that the pilot lost control due to spatial disorientation after entering instrument meteorological conditions.

The Turn Continued Beyond the Assigned Heading
Radar data showed the airplane continuing past 255° toward a northerly heading and then descending. The NTSB identified the continuing turn followed by the rapid descent as consistent with spatial disorientation after the aircraft entered IMC.
The Weather Picture
The closest reporting station, about 33 miles from the accident site, reported 7 statute miles visibility and an overcast ceiling of 1,400 ft roughly twelve minutes before the accident. An AIRMET for IFR conditions in mist and fog was active. Pilot reports in the region included IMC between 1,400 and 2,000 ft. The airplane was climbing through the altitude band where those conditions could become significant.
The Sun Was Barely Above the Horizon
Sunrise at the accident location occurred only about twelve minutes before the accident. At the time of the event the sun was approximately 1.9 degrees above the horizon. The NTSB considered the low sun angle and mist important because they could restrict forward visibility and make a reliable visual horizon difficult to identify over the open Pacific.
No Evidence of a Mechanical Trigger
Examination of the recovered airframe established control continuity where the components were recovered. No anomaly was found that would have prevented normal operation. Although the engine was not recovered, the airframe damage was consistent with a high-speed water impact. The final report therefore relied on the radar track, weather and ATC chronology rather than an identified equipment failure.
A Very Short Window
From the pilot’s last acknowledged departure instruction to the loss of radar contact, the accident developed in roughly one minute. That compressed timeline is why the weather, sun angle and radar evidence are central: there was little opportunity for a separate ATC intervention once the turn and descent began.
Conclusion
N157RC’s final minute was extraordinarily compressed. The pilot acknowledged a normal departure clearance, began the assigned turn, then the airplane continued turning and descended before radar contact was lost. The NTSB attributed the loss of control to spatial disorientation after entry into IMC.
