The flight from Hollywood-North Perry Airport to Key West was supposed to take a little over an hour, tracing the Overseas Highway down through the Keys. It didn't get far. About ten minutes after takeoff, the Cessna 172H's engine quit entirely — a total loss of power, no warning, nothing to work with but altitude and whatever was below.
What was below was one of the causeways linking the Keys together, carrying traffic in both directions, packed with cars and pedestrians on a stretch of road with nowhere else nearby to put down an airplane. The pilot declared an emergency and turned toward the bridge.
A Runway With Traffic On It
There's no good option in that situation, only a least-bad one. Water on either side offered a survivable ditching if handled right, but with the causeway directly beneath, the pilot made the call to attempt a forced landing on the roadway itself — a decision that trades the certainty of a water landing for the chance of finding a clear enough stretch of pavement, with the very real risk that "clear enough" doesn't exist on an active bridge.
It didn't exist. The Cessna struck two vehicles during the landing attempt and caught fire. The aircraft was destroyed.

The toll wasn't confined to the airplane. The pilot was fatally injured. Two passengers aboard the Cessna suffered serious injuries. And on the bridge itself — in the vehicles struck, or nearby when the crash and fire unfolded — five more people sustained minor injuries. Carburetor Ice on a Clear Day
The NTSB's investigation found no mechanical defect in the engine itself — no broken part, no fuel contamination, nothing structurally wrong. The conditions that day were visual, not the kind of weather most pilots associate with icing risk. But carburetor ice doesn't require freezing temperatures or visible cloud; it forms from the cooling effect of fuel vaporizing inside the carburetor, combined with ambient humidity, and it can build in conditions that feel entirely benign from the cockpit — warm, clear, unremarkable. Left unaddressed, it starves the engine of air until power drops off, sometimes gradually, sometimes suddenly and completely.
The investigation's probable cause centered on exactly that: conditions conducive to carburetor icing, and the pilot's failure to apply carburetor heat — a simple control, standard procedure in exactly this kind of weather — in time to prevent the ice from choking off engine power.

Every pilot trained on a carbureted engine learns to apply carburetor heat periodically, particularly during descents or in conditions where humidity and temperature align toward ice formation, precisely because the failure mode is so easy to miss until it's already happening. It's a checklist item, not a judgment call — one that, applied at the right moment, prevents exactly the kind of total power loss this flight experienced ten minutes into a routine trip down the Keys.
