NTSB Final Report and ATC Audio: Fatal Crash of TNFlyGirl
The Flight
On the morning of 7 December 2023, a 1965 Beechcraft 35-C33 Debonair, registration N5891J, lifted off from Knoxville Downtown Island Airport (KDKX) under clear skies. At the controls was Jenny Blalock, the 44-year-old private pilot known to thousands of online followers as TNFlyGirl. Beside her sat her father, James Blalock Jr. Their destination was Saline County Regional Airport (KSUZ) in Arkansas, a planned 430-nautical-mile cross-country flight that would take them across Tennessee and into the central United States for avionics work on the airplane.
Less than ninety minutes later the Debonair was descending through 10,000 feet per minute and striking the ground near Pulaski, Tennessee, at approximately 228 knots. Both occupants were killed. The National Transportation Safety Board released its final report on 19 February 2026, more than two years after the accident. The report, together with recovered ATC communications and ADS-B track data, reconstructed a flight that began routinely and ended in a rapid, oscillating loss of control.
The Pilot and the Airplane
Jenny Blalock had earned her private pilot certificate roughly one year earlier. By the time of the accident she logged approximately 400 total flight hours. Much of her training and early flying had been documented on her YouTube channel, which carried more than 15,000 subscribers and nearly 140 videos at the time of the crash. She was working toward an instrument rating. The Beechcraft 35-C33 she owned was a high-performance, complex airplane with retractable landing gear and a 260-horsepower Continental IO-470 engine—noticeably more demanding than the Piper Cherokee in which she had trained. The NTSB later described the aircraft as “beyond her level of pilot proficiency.”
Toxicology testing detected alprazolam (Xanax) and other medications commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression. The Federal Aviation Administration advises against flying while using these substances because of their potential to impair cognitive function and judgment. The NTSB noted their presence but stated it could not determine with certainty whether the medications contributed to the accident.
The Flight Reconstruction and ATC Data
Departure from Knoxville occurred at 0948 CST. Early ATC communications and ADS-B data showed a normal climb and cruise. The airplane was level and on course for the planned route. Approximately one hour into the flight the track began to display an irregular vertical profile: alternating climbs and descents with rates reaching 1,200 feet per minute down and 500 feet per minute up. Airspeed fluctuated in the opposite direction—increasing in descent, decreasing in climb—consistent with a pilot fighting the airplane’s pitch attitude rather than a mechanical failure.
Controllers noted the unusual altitude changes. The final moments showed a rapid, steepening descent. Impact occurred at 1103 CST near Pulaski. There were no reported weather complications, no precipitation, and no evidence of engine or flight-control system failure that would have prevented continued flight. Post-accident examination was limited by impact damage, but investigators found no pre-impact mechanical anomalies that explained the loss of control.
What the Data Revealed
The oscillating flight path matched the classic signature of pilot-induced oscillations (PIO). In a PIO, the pilot’s control inputs and the airplane’s response become out of phase. Each corrective action arrives a fraction of a second too late, amplifying rather than damping the motion. The NTSB concluded that improper trim management and possible interaction with the autopilot were the most likely contributors. When a pilot manually overrides or fights an engaged autopilot, or fails to trim the airplane properly before engaging it, the resulting pitch excursions can quickly exceed the pilot’s ability to recover.
The final impact parameters left little margin. A descent rate exceeding 10,000 feet per minute at more than 200 knots is unsurvivable in a light single-engine airplane. Both occupants died at the scene.

The TNFlyGirl accident is a modern illustration of an old lesson: moving into a higher-performance, complex airplane requires more than a private pilot certificate and enthusiasm. Autopilot systems and sophisticated trim can mask deficiencies in basic aircraft control until the moment those systems are misunderstood or mismanaged. When that moment arrives, the margin for recovery can disappear in seconds. The NTSB’s findings reinforce the value of structured transition training, rigorous personal minimums, and strict adherence to medical fitness standards—especially for pilots who share their flying publicly and may feel pressure to continue a flight that has already begun to unravel. Every cross-country departure is an opportunity to reassess whether the airplane, the weather, and the pilot’s current condition are truly matched. In this case, they were not.
