Student Pilot gets TRAPPED in clouds

On December 11, 2016, a student pilot flying a Cessna 172 contacted Denver TRACON while operating in the Centennial Airport area. The intended destination was Pueblo Memorial Airport. During the flight, the student encountered difficulty navigating through clouds and began asking the controller for vectors.

After the event, the controller contacted the student's flight instructor. The instructor said the student would receive additional training in navigation and radio procedures before progressing further in the flight-training program.

The incident is significant because the immediate problem was not a mechanical failure. A student pilot entered conditions that made navigation difficult and then needed sustained assistance from air traffic control. The controller's decision to slow the situation down, determine the pilot's intentions and encourage a return to a known airport prevented the situation from developing further.
