Multiple Failed Landing Attempts—ATC Coaches Student Pilot to a Safe Landing

John Charlton consistently demonstrates dedication and professionalism as an air traffic controller at LCH. On September 23, 2008, he once again went above and beyond, ensuring a safe outcome in a situation that could have easily ended in tragedy. His quick thinking, patience, and expertise proved vital in guiding a struggling student pilot to safety.

On that day, Charlton was working local control when a Delta State University student pilot contacted him for clearance. After clearing the Cessna 172 to land on Runway 15, he watched as the pilot made two unsuccessful attempts. Sensing the pilot becoming flustered, he knew immediate intervention was necessary to prevent a critical error.

Charlton took it upon himself to provide extra attention to the aircraft. After a third failed attempt, he alerted crash and rescue teams as a precaution. To help the pilot focus, he instructed her to follow his commands without responding.

He then guided her step by step through crosswind correction, airspeed control, and descent techniques. Finally, after four failed attempts, the aircraft touched down successfully. Before concluding the assist, Charlton ensured the pilot applied the brakes and taxied safely off the runway.

His actions earned high praise from aviation professionals. “John’s actions speak highly for the amount of dedication that he showed on this day and every day that he reports to work at FAA LCH ATC,” said Lake Charles Regional Airport Director of Public Safety, Chad Primeaux, who has over 18 years of experience in airport public safety. He emphasized that Charlton’s professionalism and dedication were crucial in preventing a disastrous outcome.

Despite the high-pressure situation, Charlton remained calm, continuing to manage other aircraft and ground vehicles while guiding the shaken pilot to safety. His remarkable tolerance and steady leadership ensured that she walked away unharmed. “Through the years, I have heard and witnessed many emergency situations involving aircraft,” wrote airport Executive Director Heath Allen in a letter to the FAA.

“I can’t say that I have ever observed such a devoted, extraordinary effort as Mr. Charlton gave to ensure that the young pilot landed safely.”
