Tragic Plane Crash Killed Entire Buchanan Family: Four Lives Lost Near Lee County, North Carolina

The Cirrus SR22T was only a few miles from home when the situation changed from a manageable equipment problem into an emergency.

Travis Buchanan was flying his family back to Sanford, North Carolina, after a trip to Florida. A cellphone call to the airport's fixed-base operator became the final known communication from the aircraft. Within minutes, the Cirrus crashed in a field in Lee County, roughly five miles from Raleigh Executive Jetport.

Travis Buchanan, 35, his wife Candace, 35, and their children, Aubrey, 10, and Walker, 9, all died.

The crash occurred on July 7, 2025, and immediately drew investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration. Early reporting made clear that this was not a simple case of an aircraft disappearing without warning: investigators learned that the airplane had experienced electrical and communication problems during the flight and later developed an engine problem shortly before the crash. The Flight Home

For most of the flight, nothing indicated that the trip would end in tragedy.

But while it was still in Florida, the first technical problem emerged.

Electrical Problems Appear

According to the NTSB's preliminary report, the aircraft stopped transmitting data shortly after departure while it was over the Atlantic.

The pilot subsequently communicated with an air traffic controller and reported electrical problems.

Crucially, he did not initially declare an emergency.

That decision gives important context to what followed.

An electrical problem in a modern Cirrus can potentially affect multiple systems simultaneously. Communication, navigation, transponder and other avionics functions may depend on the aircraft's electrical architecture. Losing those systems does not automatically mean the airplane is uncontrollable, but it can significantly reduce the pilot's ability to communicate and navigate, particularly while approaching an unfamiliar or busy airport.

In this case, the aircraft continued north.

For the moment, the flight remained underway.

The Aircraft Loses More Than Communications

As the Cirrus approached North Carolina, the situation became increasingly complicated.

The airplane was eventually unable to communicate normally with the airport.

Instead of relying solely on the aircraft's radio equipment, Candace Buchanan used her cellphone to call the fixed-base operator at Raleigh Executive Jetport.

The preliminary NTSB report says she reported that the airplane did not have functioning navigation or communication equipment.

This detail is significant because it shows the family was actively trying to solve the problem.

They were not simply continuing blindly.

They were attempting to establish a path to the runway using whatever communication method remained available.

The airport's staff also alerted pilots in the area to the situation so that traffic operating around Raleigh Executive could be aware of the aircraft's difficulties. (Yahoo)

At this point, the aircraft was still alive in the sense that the crew was attempting to organize a landing.

"Engine Problems"

Shortly after the cellphone call concerning communications and navigation, Candace contacted the airport again.

This time, the message was more urgent.

The aircraft was experiencing engine problems and needed to make a straight-in emergency landing.

That was the final known communication.

Yet the aircraft never reached the runway.

The State Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m.

Three occupants died at the scene.

The fourth was transported by helicopter to UNC Hospitals but later died.

The Last Few Miles

The geography of the accident makes the final portion of the flight particularly difficult to comprehend.

The family had made it almost all the way home.

The aircraft had already crossed hundreds of miles from Florida and was now only minutes from its destination.

But proximity to an airport does not necessarily mean an aircraft in distress can safely reach it.

A single-engine aircraft experiencing engine problems has only the energy available in its altitude, airspeed and remaining propulsion. If engine power is reduced or lost, the pilot must immediately manage airspeed and glide performance while simultaneously selecting a suitable landing area.

The presence of an airport nearby can help enormously—but only if the aircraft can remain controllable and reach it.

In this case, the Cirrus came down in an open field before reaching Raleigh Executive.

Investigators would need to determine exactly what happened to the engine, how much power was available during the final minutes and how the aircraft was being flown.

Those questions cannot be answered reliably from the preliminary evidence alone.

The Cirrus Airframe Parachute System

The aircraft was equipped with a feature that makes Cirrus aircraft particularly recognizable: the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, or CAPS.

The system is designed to provide an additional emergency option by deploying a large parachute that lowers the aircraft toward the ground when a pilot determines that a safe conventional landing is no longer possible.

In this accident, however, the parachute was not deployed.

That finding does not, by itself, establish why CAPS was not activated.

Investigators specifically cautioned against drawing conclusions from the absence of parachute deployment.

The system has operational limitations, including altitude, airspeed and other factors. In a rapidly developing emergency, the crew may also have very little time to evaluate the situation and decide whether CAPS is appropriate.

The NTSB's preliminary report did not determine whether CAPS could have prevented the accident or whether the circumstances permitted its successful deployment.

That question remains separate from determining what caused the aircraft to lose its ability to continue safely.

The Fuel Evidence

Investigators also examined the airplane's fuel system.

This is another area where caution is important.

The presence of little fuel in one tank does not automatically prove that the engine stopped because the aircraft ran out of fuel. Investigators must determine the fuel state before the accident, the aircraft's fuel consumption, tank configuration, fuel-system condition and whether fuel was available to the engine during the final phase.

For a responsible accident reconstruction, the correct conclusion is therefore simply that fuel-system evidence was documented and remained part of the investigation.

No Evidence of an Explosion or Fire

The initial wreckage examination also produced another important finding.

An explosion could indicate a very different accident sequence.

A post-crash fire could obscure evidence.

The exact relationship between those problems remained unresolved.

The Buchanan Family

There Is No NTSB Probable-Cause Sentence Yet

For previous accident reconstructions, it may be appropriate to quote the NTSB's final probable-cause statement.

This accident is different.

The July 2025 NTSB document available from the early investigation was a preliminary report, not a final report. It described factual findings and expressly did not determine the cause.

Therefore, there is no final NTSB probable-cause sentence that can responsibly be quoted for this accident at this stage.

Any article claiming that the NTSB determined the accident was caused by fuel exhaustion, engine failure, electrical failure, pilot error, parachute non-deployment or another specific factor would be going beyond the evidence available in the preliminary report.

That distinction is especially important because aviation accident investigations frequently change direction as investigators recover additional evidence.

A damaged engine may initially appear to have failed catastrophically but later prove to have been operating normally until the final impact.

A fuel tank containing little fuel may initially raise questions about fuel exhaustion but later be explained by the aircraft's fuel-system configuration or fuel transfer.

An unused parachute may appear significant but ultimately have no bearing on the cause.

The ATC and Communication Story

For an ATC-focused reconstruction, the communication sequence is one of the most important aspects of this accident.

The flight began with normal aviation communications.

Then electrical problems developed.

Later, the aircraft's normal communication and navigation capabilities were no longer available.

The airport staff relayed information and alerted pilots operating nearby.

Finally, the family reported an engine problem and requested a straight-in emergency landing.

Then there was silence.

The progression demonstrates an important aviation principle: communication problems can become operational problems even when the aircraft itself remains flyable.

Why the Cause Must Be Left Open

The temptation after an accident is to find a single explanation.

Electrical failure.

Pilot error.

Parachute.

But aviation accidents rarely deserve that kind of premature certainty.

In this case, several abnormalities occurred in sequence. The aircraft experienced electrical problems. Communication and navigation equipment became unavailable. The family attempted to coordinate a landing by cellphone. Then an engine problem was reported.
