Atlanta Airshow Crash — 2016
Flight context
Airshow flying compresses the margins that exist in normal aviation. The aircraft may be structurally capable of aggressive maneuvering, but the altitude available for recovery is deliberately limited. At Atlanta Regional Airport on 14 May 2016, a Pitts S-2SW was performing a display sequence when its positioning during an aerobatic maneuver deteriorated.
The investigation found no evidence that the airplane suddenly became mechanically uncontrollable. Instead, the aircraft's position relative to the intended display line became incorrect, the pilot continued maneuvering while descending and did not discontinue the maneuver before the remaining altitude disappeared.
The critical sequence
The display was being flown in wind that was not aligned with the show line. Gusts were reported up to about 25 knots. A crosswind can produce lateral displacement during an aerobatic maneuver, and the pilot must compensate while preserving the planned geometry.
The NTSB found that the pilot failed to maintain proper positioning during the maneuver. The airplane then entered a steep descent while the pilot continued attempting to re-establish the intended position.
That distinction is important. The crash was not simply a stall or mechanical failure. The pilot had reached a point where the correct response was to stop trying to salvage the maneuver and recover the aircraft away from the display geometry.
The investigation also considered toxicology. Diphenhydramine and dextromethorphan were detected in urine but not blood. The NTSB could not determine whether an underlying medical condition or medication effect affected the pilot's ability to control the airplane.
ATC decisions during the event
ATC plays a limited role during a display maneuver because the critical geometry is controlled by the airshow sequence and the pilot's visual references. Radar can show where the aircraft is, but it cannot substitute for the pilot's immediate awareness of the show line and recovery altitude. The case reinforces that low-level aerobatics require an explicit escape decision whenever the planned maneuver cannot be completed cleanly.
Investigation and aftermath
The NTSB also reviewed spectator video frame by frame. The Pitts pulled over the top of the half Cuban-8, rolled approximately one and a half times to the left and then established on the 45-degree down line. The extra roll was not part of the normal manoeuvre and left the aircraft farther from the expected show position. The investigation found that the wind was approximately perpendicular to the show line, with gusts reaching about 25 knots. There was no evidence of a pre-impact mechanical malfunction.
The formation context also matters because the intended geometry depended on both aircraft reaching their planned positions at the same time. Once the Pitts was displaced from the show line, the normal visual references and spacing assumptions no longer applied. The NTSB's conclusion therefore focused on the pilot's failure to maintain the intended position during the aerobatic sequence rather than on a hidden aircraft-system failure.
What the sequence shows
The Atlanta crash is a textbook example of the difference between aircraft control and operational control. A pilot may still be able to command the airplane while simultaneously being in a position from which recovery is no longer possible. Airshow procedures exist to prevent exactly that situation: positioning gates, minimum altitudes and a willingness to abandon the maneuver are safety barriers.
- Maintain display-line geometry throughout aerobatic sequences.
- Do not attempt to salvage a maneuver when recovery margins are shrinking.
- Treat crosswind displacement as a primary operational hazard.
- Set a clear point at which the maneuver will be discontinued.
- Low-altitude aerobatics leave almost no time for correction after a positional error.
