Small Plane Strikes Pedestrian During Emergency Landing at Heartwell Park

At about 4 p.m. on October 21, 2025, a small experimental aircraft attempted an emergency landing on a soccer field at Heartwell Park in Long Beach, California. The aircraft, a Rutan Long-EZ registered N8183K, struck a woman on the ground as it came in to land. The pilot and pedestrian were both seriously injured, according to the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary investigation.

The Flight Back Toward Long Beach

The NTSB preliminary account says the aircraft had been part of a two-aircraft flight from Compton Airport to French Valley Airport in Murrieta. After the outbound portion, the two pilots began the return toward Compton at about 3:30 p.m. The Long-EZ pilot reported that the beginning of the return was uneventful. The problem developed later when he noticed the fuel flow decreasing even though the engine continued to run smoothly.

Loss of Engine Power

According to the preliminary investigation, the engine later throttled back. The pilot attempted to restore fuel pressure, but the engine surged, decreased to idle and then lost power completely. The aircraft was descending at approximately 700 feet per minute. The pilot attempted to divert toward Long Beach Airport but realized the aircraft could not reach the airport and selected a nearby park for a forced landing.

A Soccer Field Became the Landing Site

The aircraft came down on its belly at Heartwell Park, where people were present for youth sports. The NTSB report says the pilot stated that he did not see anyone in the aircraft’s flight path as he approached the park. During the forced landing, the aircraft struck a pedestrian. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and both wings.
