Mooney M20J Crashes Into Powerlines | Pilot Calls 911 While Dangling Above Ground

The controller's voice was calm, routine, running through the same instrument approach clearance she'd given a hundred times before. On the other end, a Mooney M20J was descending through the dark toward Montgomery County Airpark near Gaithersburg, Maryland, on the night of 27 November 2022 — night, instrument conditions, cloud all the way down. Somewhere in the final minutes of that approach, the airplane drifted 500 feet below where it was supposed to be, and off to one side of where it was supposed to be too. It found a power line tower instead of the runway.
Both people aboard — the pilot and his passenger — survived, though seriously injured. The Mooney was destroyed. What followed in the investigation wasn't a story about mechanical failure. It was a story about a pilot who had two GPS units in the cockpit and was using the wrong one.
Two GPS Units, One Question
The Mooney was equipped with an IFR-certified GPS — the kind built and approved to provide the vertical and lateral guidance a pilot needs to fly a precise instrument approach safely down through cloud to minimums. It also had a separate, VFR-only handheld GPS, the kind meant for supplemental situational awareness, not for flying an approach in solid IMC.
According to the pilot's own account afterward, he had mis-programmed the panel-mounted IFR unit. Rather than working through the problem or aborting the approach, he leaned on the handheld instead — a unit that was never certified to provide the kind of vertical guidance an approach like this demands, and wasn't giving him any indication of how far above or below the correct glidepath he actually was.
Looking for the Runway
What the investigation reconstructed from there is a familiar and dangerous pattern in instrument flying: a pilot, uncertain of his instrument guidance, shifts his attention outside the cockpit, trying to visually pick out the runway environment through the weather before he's actually low enough or close enough to see it. Every second spent scanning outward for lights that aren't there yet is a second not spent cross-checking altitude. The airplane continued descending — 500 feet below the minimum altitude prescribed for that segment of the approach — and drifted off the centerline in the process. The power line tower was directly in the path that resulted.
No mechanical fault was found anywhere on the airframe or engine. The Mooney flew exactly as it should have, all the way into the tower.
What the Instruments Are For
Instrument flight rules exist because human eyes are unreliable in cloud, fog, and darkness — pilots can become spatially disoriented, misjudge distance, or simply see nothing at all until it's too late to react. The entire discipline of instrument flying is built around trusting the panel over the eyes, particularly below minimums, when there's no visual reference to trust anyway. A VFR handheld GPS, however capable it might be for road-trip-style navigation, was never designed to substitute for that trust — it has no vertical guidance certified for an approach, no integrity monitoring, none of the redundancy built into a proper IFR navigator.
The pilot's choice to rely on it instead of correctly programming his certified unit wasn't a single catastrophic decision — it was a chain of smaller ones, each reasonable-seeming in isolation: a GPS mis-programmed rather than double-checked, a shift to a backup device rather than a missed approach, a continued descent while visually searching rather than a level-off to reassess. Individually, none of those choices reads as unsafe. Together, they put an aircraft 500 feet low, off course, in the dark, in the one place a tower happened to be standing.
The Approach That Should Have Been Aborted
Every published instrument approach carries a decision altitude or minimum descent altitude — a hard floor below which a pilot is not permitted to continue unless the runway environment is clearly in sight.
A Widening Gap Between Panel and Person
The Mooney M20J is a well-regarded, capable single-engine aircraft, and an IFR-certified GPS of the type installed in this one is designed to be trustworthy specifically because it's certified — its software, its integrity monitoring, and its installation are all held to a standard that a consumer-grade handheld unit simply isn't required to meet.
