VFR Pilot Becomes Lost in IMC With Fuel Running Low

A Cessna 150 pilot flying in poor weather near Oklahoma City and Tulsa found himself lost, low on fuel and struggling to maintain the aircraft when the flight entered a rapidly developing emergency.

The aircraft was operating VFR but encountered solid instrument conditions. The pilot became disoriented and sought assistance through the emergency frequency. A Southwest Airlines pilot also became involved in trying to understand the situation and help identify where the small aircraft was.

Controllers eventually brought the aircraft onto a ZFW frequency and identified it on radar. The data block was marked for emergency handling. By then the pilot was having difficulty maintaining altitude and did not have enough power to climb effectively.

The weather picture offered few attractive choices. One area west of Oklahoma City reportedly had better conditions, but the aircraft was too far away to reach it comfortably with only about a quarter of a tank remaining.

Controllers selected Chandler Municipal Airport as the practical landing destination. The airport was near Interstate 44 and had a ceiling of about 900 feet, which was still preferable to the conditions surrounding the aircraft.

The controller's instructions focused on basic aircraft control. The pilot was told to concentrate on instruments, avoid trying to use outside visual references in the clouds, keep the wings level and maintain airspeed. These are simple instructions, but the situation was not simple: the pilot was disoriented, low on fuel and struggling to hold altitude.

Radio communication then became another problem. As the aircraft descended below about 2,500 feet, controllers lost direct communications. They moved the situation onto an advisory frequency and used another general-aviation pilot to relay information.

The emergency therefore became a multi-layered coordination problem. The original pilot was still flying the aircraft, but the surrounding pilots and controllers helped maintain a communication chain when the normal frequency link failed.
