F-16 Collides With F-4 Phantom During 1982 Training Mission
The event in context
On 15/12/1982, F-16A 81-0274 collided with a USMC F-4 Phantom II during DACT (Dissimilar Air Combat Training) mission. The right wing of the Phantom cut through the belly of the F-16 at a 35 degree angle. The resulting damage to the engine gearbox meant the aircraft could not recover.
Both aircraft were passing head-to-head at Mach 1 meaning a closure rate of Mach 2. The pilot, Captain Daryl "Smilin' Jack" Hower, was forced to eject from the F-16 at an altitude of around 23,000 feet but was relatively unhurt. The F-16 slowly drifted down and impacted the ground on a muddy tidal plain.
The surviving aircraft record identifies the F-16 as 81-0724. F-16.net records the aircraft as an F-16A Block 15E assigned to the 35th Tactical Fighter Squadron and documents the December 15, 1982 DACT collision with a USMC F-4J. A contemporary UPI report also identifies Capt. Daryl Hower and the combat-tactics training mission involving another F-16 and two F-4 Phantoms.
Reconstructing this flight
The USMC found it to be a unique opportunity to practice combat repair techniques by patching up the Phantom. As a result of this mishap the minimum range for shot criteria (IR missiles) was increased to 9,000 ft in the forward hemisphere to allow for adequate separation of aircraft after the shot
The collision geometry is the defining fact. The F-4’s right wing cut through the lower fuselage of the F-16 at about 35 degrees while the aircraft were approaching head-on at roughly Mach 1 each. The combined closure rate was therefore approximately Mach 2. Damage to the F-16’s engine gearbox made recovery impossible, and Hower ejected at about 23,000 feet.
What the evidence establishes
The accident had a second life after the collision. The F-4 survived sufficiently for Marine maintainers to use it as a combat-repair training opportunity. The aircraft record also identifies the Phantom as BuNo 155746 / DR-03 of VMFA-312 ‘Checkerboards.’ The later training change—an increase in forward-hemisphere IR missile-shot minimum range to 9,000 feet—is the most important operational legacy reported for the mishap.
The Head-On Closure and Midair Collision
The reconstructed sequence can be read as a chain of six decision points: DACT engagement → Head-on closure ~Mach 2 → F-4 wing strikes F-16 → Gearbox damage → Ejection ~23,000 ft → Unmanned F-16 descends. Each step changed the aircraft’s available options. The important analytical point is not to isolate the final impact from the preceding events; the final outcome was produced by the accumulation of the earlier changes in aircraft state, position, workload and available escape options.
The ATC/radar perspective is most useful when it is synchronized with the aircraft evidence. In this case the critical transition is the move from dact engagement to unmanned f-16 descends. Once the aircraft reached the later stages of the sequence, the crew had fewer safe alternatives than they had at the beginning. That is the operational value of reconstructing the event rather than describing it only from the final crash scene.
Additional evidence and analysis
The surviving Phantom is an important part of the story. F-16.net records identify it as BuNo 155746 / DR-03 of VMFA-312 ‘Checkerboards’ and note that photographs exist of the damaged Phantom awaiting repair and of the F-16 remains in a hangar. The Marine Corps reportedly used the Phantom as a combat-repair training opportunity. That unusual aftermath is more valuable than generic statements about fighter-pilot workload because it shows a concrete training benefit extracted from the mishap.
How the Unmanned F-16 Continued
The decisive safety issue in this incident was specific to the sequence: Head-on closure ~Mach 2; F-4 wing strikes F-16; Gearbox damage. Treating those events as isolated anomalies would miss the way they interacted.
