Cirrus Pilot became HYPOXIC mid-air | ATC saves Pilot's Life
A pressurized Cirrus flying from Naperville to Kissimmee developed an oxygen problem over the Indianapolis area. The pilot gradually became disoriented, and an air-traffic controller recognized that the change in the pilot's voice was more than a routine frequency-switch problem.
A Change in the Pilot's Voice
N940TS departed Naperville for Kissimmee early on January 9, 2023. Around Indianapolis, oxygen in the pressurized aircraft began to dissipate.
When Indianapolis Center controller Johnathan Lytton first attempted to transfer the aircraft to another sector, the pilot did not make the expected frequency change. The next sector returned the aircraft to Lytton's attention, and Lytton noticed that the pilot sounded different.
Recognizing Hypoxia
Lytton alerted his supervisor and coordinated with the surrounding sectors. The controllers treated the aircraft as being in distress and worked to obtain lower altitude and dedicated attention for the emergency.
Lytton repeatedly told the pilot to put on his oxygen mask. After the mask was used, the pilot's voice became clearer. The pilot later described significant loss of physical coordination, including difficulty getting his arms to respond to commands.
Getting Below the Critical Altitude
Lytton repeatedly instructed the pilot to descend to 11,000 feet. Another controller and an operational pilot helped the team manage the emergency and suggested checking the autopilot.
The pilot eventually adjusted the autopilot and began the descent. Once the aircraft descended below 16,000 feet, the pilot reported feeling much better.
The Final Recovery
Later, the aircraft temporarily lost communications because of frequency coverage. The crew of SkyWest Flight 4794, which had been monitoring the emergency, helped relay a message so N940TS could reach the appropriate sector.
The Cirrus subsequently landed without further incident. NATCA later recognized Lytton's response with an Archie League Medal of Safety Award.
The oxygen problem developed gradually rather than as an instantaneous loss of control. Over roughly 15 to 20 minutes, the pilot became increasingly impaired. The first clue for Lytton was the failure to complete a normal frequency change and the change he heard in the pilot's voice.
The recovery depended on several people. Lytton maintained the aircraft's attention, other controllers reduced frequency congestion, and an operational pilot helped suggest the autopilot adjustment. A SkyWest crew later relayed communications when N940TS temporarily lost contact because of frequency coverage.
The pilot's later description of his physical impairment illustrates how quickly hypoxia can affect a pilot's ability to carry out even simple instructions. The controller's recognition of the abnormal voice and failure to change frequency was therefore critical to detecting the emergency before the aircraft became uncontrollable.
NATCA later recognized Lytton with the 2023 Archie League Medal of Safety Award for the Great Lakes Region. The award record specifically credits his recognition of the hypoxia symptoms and the coordinated descent.
