A Cessna 182 departing Monterey encountered a violent upset after the pilot reported a rough ride and asked to return. The aircraft then dropped thousands of feet while entering a steep spiral.

The First Upset

The aircraft climbed through about 4,500 feet when the pilot reported a rough ride and requested a return to Monterey Regional Airport. Shortly afterward, the altitude fell to approximately 1,800 feet as the aircraft entered a dangerous spiraling turn.

NorCal controllers immediately began working the aircraft. Controller Ryan Nines repeatedly told the pilot to level the wings while monitoring the aircraft against the minimum vectoring altitude.

The Autopilot Complication

A pilot on the frequency suggested using the autopilot if it was available to help keep the wings level. The Cessna pilot engaged it, but the aircraft's equipment problems made the automation difficult to use.

Controllers Keep the Aircraft Together

Controllers coordinated between sectors, considered nearby weather and worked to get the aircraft toward visual conditions. The Cessna experienced additional upsets and altitude losses, but each time controllers identified the unintended turn and instructed the pilot to stop rolling.
