Aircraft lands With Just 6 Minutes of Fuel Left ATC’s award winning flight assist
On 30 November 2015, a Dassault Falcon 10 approaching Nome, Alaska, reached the point where the destination was no longer a dependable option. Low cloud, snow and freezing fog had already defeated two landing attempts. The pilot asked Anchorage Center for another airport, and controllers Ronald Sparks and Mike Thomas directed him toward Unalakleet, about 100 miles away. The pilot was uncomfortable with the unfamiliar diversion and briefly considered returning to Nome, but the controllers knew the destination weather had deteriorated and the available fuel was shrinking.

Two failed approaches changed the problem
The first critical fact is that the fuel emergency did not begin with an engine malfunction. The problem developed because the destination became progressively less usable. Nome's weather included very poor visibility, snow and freezing fog, and the pilot could not complete two approaches.
That created a decision problem in which the most familiar airport was not necessarily the safest one. Unalakleet was roughly 100 miles east and had better conditions. Sparks and Thomas used the weather information available to them to identify it and began directing the Falcon 10 there.
The pilot wanted the airport he knew
The diversion became more difficult when the pilot became nervous about continuing toward an unfamiliar airport. NATCA's account records that he wanted to return to Nome. The controllers did not simply comply. They knew the weather at Nome was worsening and that the aircraft was running low on fuel.
The controllers' role was therefore not limited to giving headings. They had information the pilot did not have from inside the cockpit: current destination weather and the broader picture of the route. They used that information to keep the aircraft moving toward an airport that still offered a viable landing opportunity.
The last obstacle was the approach information
Reaching Unalakleet did not automatically solve the problem. The pilot realized that he did not have the appropriate approach plates. The controllers established that the aircraft's navigation database still contained the airport information and provided the additional details needed to make the approach usable.
By the end of the event, the aircraft had been in communication with the controllers for roughly an hour and a half. The pilot landed with six minutes of fuel remaining. NATCA later recognized Sparks and Thomas with the Archie League Medal of Safety Award.

The most consequential decision in the event occurred before the final approach.
