VFR Pilot hopelessly lost in IFR condition

On February 15, 2022, Beech Bonanza N77FH, operating VFR toward Boulder City Airport, encountered conditions the pilot was not qualified to fly in. The pilot had checked in with Las Vegas TRACON asking for assistance and later entered instrument conditions, lost control and became inverted. He recovered the airplane, experienced a temporary loss of engine power, restarted the engine and continued toward Boulder City with extensive help from air traffic controllers.

The pilot asks for help

NATCA's account says N77FH checked in VFR with Las Vegas TRACON and stated that he needed assistance. The aircraft had climbed into Class A airspace, with the pilot reporting 19,300 feet while the Mode C altitude readout was not functioning. The controller asked whether the pilot was IFR qualified; he said he was not.

The aircraft was eventually transferred to another controller team while descending toward Boulder City. The controller verified the assigned heading, and the pilot acknowledged the instruction before turning back toward the airport.

Loss of control in the clouds

At this stage the controller's role was not simply routine vectoring. The NATCA account describes the controller maintaining a calm voice while helping the pilot recover from the unusual attitude and continue toward the airport.

Finding the runway

Although the Bonanza was approaching Boulder City, the pilot could not initially see the airport because of altitude and cloud cover. Controllers and personnel in the room worked with other aircraft to get the airport's lights turned on because Boulder City is a non-controlled airport. The controller then continued providing landing information until the pilot located the airport and landed safely.

Why the outcome matters

This was not simply a case of a lost pilot receiving a vector. The sequence included entry into Class A airspace, loss of visual reference, an inverted attitude, an engine-power interruption and difficulty locating the airport. The aircraft and pilot survived because the emergency was recognized and ATC assistance remained available throughout the recovery.

The pilot was initially able to report that he could see the ground, but after the transfer toward Boulder City the aircraft made a sharp turn away from its assigned heading. The instructor controller recognized that something was wrong, verified the heading and kept the aircraft on the intended route.
