United Boeing 777 Struck Unknown Object at 8000 feet over Newark

On November 23, 2022, a United Airlines Boeing 777-300ER (N2534U) operating flight UA999 from Newark to Brussels struck an object at around 8,000 feet shortly after departure. The crew declared an emergency, leveled off at 10,000 feet, requested delay vectors, and returned safely to Newark.

The Object Strike

The available incident record is intentionally narrow. It establishes the aircraft, flight number, approximate altitude and the return to Newark, but it does not identify the object conclusively. The crew treated the encounter as serious enough to declare an emergency and discontinue the planned flight.

The object remained unidentified in the reports reviewed.

Even with those additional details, the identity of the object remains unresolved in the sources reviewed. The correct description is therefore a reported strike or encounter with an unknown object.

The ATC recording also indicates that the aircraft was cleared to land after the return sequence. The landing completed the event without a reported injury or aircraft-loss outcome.

The additional ATC recording sequence is consistent with contemporary reporting: the aircraft stopped its climb, declared an emergency, requested to return and ultimately landed at Newark. The object identification remains unresolved.
