United 737 Declares Mayday After Takeoff—Returns Safely to O’Hare
United 737 Returns to O’Hare After Low Oil Pressure Warning
United Airlines Flight UA1316 departed Chicago O’Hare for Sarasota on July 16, 2025, but the flight lasted only about 20 minutes. Shortly after takeoff, the Boeing 737-700, registered N24736, developed a low oil-pressure warning on the right-hand engine. The crew declared an emergency and returned to O’Hare.
The Warning After Takeoff
Airportia and The Aviation Herald reported that UA1316 departed from O’Hare’s Runway 22L and stopped its climb after the low oil-pressure warning appeared. The crew turned back toward the airport and requested an immediate return. The flight was operating a Boeing 737-700 powered by CFM56-7B engines.
A Direct Return
The aircraft returned to O’Hare and landed safely on Runway 28C. Contemporary reports put the landing at roughly 20 to 24 minutes after departure. The aircraft was subsequently returned to service about five hours after landing, according to Airportia’s report.
The Replacement Flight
Because the original aircraft could not continue to Sarasota immediately, United substituted Boeing 737-700 N54711. Airportia reported that the replacement aircraft reached Sarasota about six and a half hours late. The original aircraft remained at O’Hare for several hours before returning to service.
What Happened After the Warning
The reports establish a low oil-pressure warning followed by an emergency return to O’Hare. They do not establish an engine failure, engine damage or a specific mechanical defect. The warning prompted the crew to return to the departure airport.
The contemporary incident report states that the aircraft returned to Chicago O’Hare for a safe landing on runway 28C. That was the central operational outcome.
