Pilot Takes-off Without Permission at Major Airport 😕

This case brings together three separate ATC recordings involving aircraft movement without the expected takeoff clearance: a private Piper Cherokee at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, a Cirrus SR-22 at Philadelphia International Airport, and a separate example involving a pilot lining up without clearance at Salina.

The Atlanta event provides the clearest documented sequence. On May 31, 2021, Piper Cherokee N5173S was preparing to depart Atlanta for Winder-Barrow County Airport. Ground control instructed the pilot to taxi toward Runway 8R via Taxiway A and hold short of Runway 8L. The pilot correctly read back the routing.

The critical misunderstanding came during the transition between controllers. The aircraft was instructed to cross Runway 8L and hold short of Runway 8R. The pilot then continued around the corner and departed from Runway 8R without receiving a takeoff clearance.

The tower controller allowed the aircraft to continue briefly while it was already in its critical phase of flight, then established contact and asked whether the pilot had received a takeoff clearance. The pilot explained that he believed the instruction to proceed without delay meant he could depart.

The controller clarified that the earlier clearance had only authorized the crossing and taxi to Runway 8R. The pilot apologized. He was subsequently told that the event could constitute a pilot deviation and was given a telephone number to call.

The compilation's other examples illustrate the same basic vulnerability from different airports: a pilot can be physically positioned at a runway and still not be cleared to use it for departure. The distinction between taxi instructions, crossing instructions, line-up instructions and a takeoff clearance is operationally important.
