A pilot flying a Seminole at Orlando Executive Airport dropped an iPhone onto the runway during takeoff. The ATC exchange was later reported by several technology publications, which described airport operations locating the phone after the pilot used location information to indicate where it had fallen.

Operations located the phone

9to5Mac reported that airport operations were told the phone was about 1,000 feet down the runway and just to the right of the centerline. Once traffic conditions allowed, operations personnel went onto the runway to look for it. They subsequently reported that they had found the device.

The phone was still working

The same contemporary account reported that the iPhone was in working condition after recovery. AppleInsider likewise described the incident as a pilot dropping the phone during takeoff and the device being located with Find My. The unusual part of the story was therefore not an aircraft emergency, but the coordination required to recover an object from an active runway.

Why the ATC recording matters
