Pentagon Releases Apollo 12 Crew Audio Describing Unexplained 'Streaks of Light'

Apollo 12 was launched on November 14, 1969, carrying Pete Conrad, Richard Gordon and Alan Bean. During the mission, the astronauts experienced unusual flashes or streaks of light while inside the spacecraft.

The recordings associated with the event were released publicly in 2026 as part of a new release of declassified material. The audio comes from post-mission medical debriefing, in which the astronauts described seeing flashes even when their eyes were closed.

The reports were not observations of an aircraft or an aviation emergency. They were observations made during a crewed spaceflight, and the recording is valuable because it preserves the astronauts describing the phenomenon in their own words.

The crew's description became part of the later discussion of what could produce visual flashes in space. One important scientific explanation for similar experiences is cosmic radiation interacting with the visual system. The existence of a striking visual sensation does not by itself establish that a physical object was present outside the spacecraft.

The Apollo 12 mission itself was successful. Conrad and Bean landed on the Moon while Gordon remained in lunar orbit in the command module. The mission returned safely to Earth on November 24, 1969.

The 2026 release brought renewed attention to a decades-old piece of spaceflight history. The recording is particularly useful because it shows the difference between an unusual observation and an established explanation. The astronauts genuinely described what they perceived; the recording alone does not establish an extraordinary external cause.

The story therefore belongs as much to the history of human spaceflight and science as to the modern fascination with unidentified phenomena.

The astronauts' report centered on what they called streaks of light.
