Linebacker II: B-52 Crews Over Hanoi on 26 December 1972

On the night of December 26, 1972, Boeing B-52 crews entered one of the most heavily defended airspaces of the Vietnam War as Operation Linebacker II resumed after the Christmas Day pause. The campaign ran from December 18 through December 29 and concentrated enormous B-52 formations against targets around Hanoi and Haiphong.

The December 26 operation was particularly intense. Planning called for multiple bomber streams to converge on targets in North Vietnam, supported by fighter escorts, electronic warfare aircraft, tankers and other specialized aircraft. The B-52s were expected to maintain formation and bombing geometry while North Vietnamese surface-to-air missile batteries attempted to track and engage them.

Radio traffic from the period captures the compressed nature of the crews' workload. Warnings of SAM launches, radar uplinks and missile activity were transmitted while the bombers continued their planned attack profiles. The voices on the recordings are controlled rather than theatrical: the crews were performing a highly rehearsed sequence in an environment where a single warning could mean a missile was already on its way.

Linebacker II involved 729 B-52 sorties over eleven operational nights. The United States lost B-52s to North Vietnamese defenses during the campaign, including aircraft destroyed by SA-2 surface-to-air missiles.

The December 26 mission therefore combined the strengths and limitations of strategic airpower. The B-52s brought heavy bomb loads and sophisticated navigation and electronic systems, but they still had to fly predictable formation geometry close enough to the target for their weapons systems to work. The surrounding support package existed partly to make that geometry survivable.

The surviving radio recordings provide an unusual aviation perspective on the campaign. They are not ordinary ATC conversations. They are combat communications between aircraft and support elements in which timing, brevity and discipline were essential.
