United 787 Suffers Left-Engine Failure After Takeoff and Returns to Dulles

United Airlines Flight 108 had only just left Washington Dulles when the crew reported a left-engine failure and declared a Mayday. The 787 returned to Dulles, with the crew first considering the aircraft's weight and fuel state before landing.

UA108 was scheduled from Washington Dulles to Munich on 25 July 2025. Shortly after takeoff, the left engine failed. The crew declared an emergency and coordinated with Dulles controllers for a return.

Because the aircraft was still heavy after departure, the crew discussed fuel and the need to reduce weight before landing. The flight held while arranging the return and then received vectors for the approach.

The 787 landed safely at Dulles. Contemporary reporting identified 219 passengers and 11 crew aboard, with no injuries reported. The flight was canceled rather than continuing to Munich.

The event is a straightforward example of how an engine failure after takeoff can become a weight-management and routing problem as well as a propulsion emergency.

The Aviation Herald record provides a more precise sequence than the initial news reports. UA108 departed Dulles on Runway 30 and stopped its climb at about 5,000 feet after the left GEnx engine failed. The crew then positioned for a return to Runway 19C.

Because the aircraft was still carrying substantial transatlantic fuel, the crew requested additional altitude and a fuel-dump period of about six minutes before making another approach. The aircraft eventually landed about 55 minutes after departure.

The aircraft was then towed after landing and returned to service on 28 July 2025. A later maintenance description reported that the left engine experienced an exceedance followed by failure during the climb and became uncontrollable at approximately 5,000 feet.

Those later maintenance details are useful because they establish that the event was not simply an ATC misunderstanding. There was an actual propulsion-system problem requiring the aircraft to return, manage its weight and undergo maintenance before re-entering service.
