“Lost” VFR pilot has Compass Issues
On 6 September 2015, a Cessna departing Ranger Creek Airport encountered a far more serious weather and terrain problem than the pilot expected. The planned route followed the White River valley toward Boeing Field, but the cloud ceiling was much lower than forecast. The pilot reached a wall of cloud with high terrain on both sides and entered instrument conditions despite operating as a VFR pilot. Seattle TRACON controller Joshua Pate then had to keep the aircraft away from surrounding terrain while the pilot became increasingly disoriented.

The weather was lower than forecast
Ranger Creek sits in the foothills north of Mount Rainier. The flight plan depended on remaining in the valley and visually maintaining the route. NATCA's account says the forecast ceiling was 5,000 feet, but the actual ceiling was much lower.
When the pilot turned west to continue along the valley, he encountered cloud. With high terrain on both sides, the normal VFR escape options were disappearing. The pilot eventually contacted Seattle TRACON and reported that he was lost in cloud.
The controller could see the terrain problem
Pate was working the east sector at Seattle TRACON, an area bordering Mount Rainier and the Cascade Range. The aircraft was at approximately 5,900 feet while in cloud. Pate's emergency obstruction display showed terrain rising to approximately 6,400 feet less than five miles north of the aircraft, with additional terrain to the west that was above the aircraft's altitude.
The geometry made the problem immediate. The pilot was not simply lost in an empty cloud layer; he was operating in instrument conditions inside mountainous terrain with limited altitude margin.
Non-gyro vectors and workload reduction
Pate used non-gyro vectors to move the aircraft away from the surrounding terrain. The pilot became disoriented and began circling unintentionally, so the controller continued to provide simple headings and reassurance rather than adding unnecessary tasks.
The NATCA account describes roughly six minutes of assistance. The controller's objective was not to teach the pilot instrument flying over the radio; it was to keep the aircraft's flightpath stable long enough to reach visual conditions again.
