“I got it full throttle, We're not going nowhere” Iced UP Pilot CAN’T Find Runway to Land
The documented sequence shows why the outcome depended on both the pilot's eventual visual identification of the runway and the controller's decision to adapt the recovery plan as the original destination became impractical. The event was an emergency landing in severe icing; it was not a crash.
The pilot eventually obtained visual contact with a runway through a gap in the ice. NATCA's account records that the aircraft was still carrying substantial ice, was being flown at about 95 knots and required full power to maintain the approach. The aircraft landed safely at Madison.
During the recovery, the aircraft did not consistently follow the assigned headings. The icing had reduced the pilot's outside visibility to a small area of the windshield, while the aircraft was becoming increasingly difficult to control. Madison's tower increased the runway lighting to make the airport easier to identify.
The pilot contacted Madison Approach after reporting difficulty controlling the aircraft. Controller Jack Deutscher first considered returning the aircraft toward Watertown, but the weather there was no longer suitable for a straightforward recovery. The pilot had limited instrument experience, so Deutscher instead worked toward an approach into Madison.
On February 21, 2013, Piper N229DM was operating near Madison, Wisconsin, when deteriorating weather and airframe icing left the pilot disoriented and increasingly unable to see outside the aircraft. The flight had begun as touch-and-go practice, but the worsening conditions turned it into an emergency.
Icing Left a Piper Pilot Struggling to See the Runway
The final approach was particularly demanding because the pilot had to identify the airport through the small area of windshield that remained usable. The tower's decision to illuminate the runways at maximum intensity gave the pilot another visual cue. Once the runway was found, the aircraft was still heavily iced and required high power, making the safe landing the end of an already degraded flight rather than a routine recovery.
The weather and aircraft condition left little room for a conventional instrument recovery. The pilot had limited instrument experience, while the ice reduced both outside visibility and aircraft performance. The controller therefore had to keep adapting the plan instead of relying on the first proposed route back to Watertown.
