How American 1418 Handled a Lavatory Fire Near Detroit

American Airlines Flight 1418 was approaching Detroit when a fire was reported in the rear lavatory. The crew responded, the captain notified air traffic control, and the Airbus A321 was given emergency status before landing safely.

A Fire Reported in Flight

Flight 1418 was operating from Dallas-Fort Worth to Detroit on February 1, 2016. Contemporary reporting says a fire was reported in the rear lavatory while the aircraft was approaching Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Contemporary reporting says the fire involved paper towels. The flight attendant who reported the fire later became the subject of a federal investigation after authorities concluded that the incident had not occurred in the way it was first presented.

The captain notified air traffic control and the aircraft was given emergency status. The immediate operational priority was the same as it would have been for any reported lavatory fire: get the aircraft safely onto the ground.

The Investigation Changed the Story

Investigators later alleged that Johnathan Tafoya-Montano had used a lighter to start the fire and then pretended to discover it. The FBI said he eventually admitted setting the fire and lying about it.

CBS reported that the aircraft landed safely and that no passengers or crew members were injured. The later criminal case concerned the alleged intentional act and false statements rather than a failure of the aircraft’s emergency response.

This distinction is central to the reconstruction. The ATC emergency was real from the crew’s perspective because a fire had been reported. The unusual element was discovered only afterward, when investigators examined who had started it and why.
