F16 Intercepts Plane With Headbutt Move Near Trump's Mar a Lago Resort (Audio Only)

On April 4, 2025, NORAD F-16 fighters responded to a general-aviation aircraft that entered the Temporary Flight Restriction over Palm Beach, Florida, while President Donald Trump was at Mar-a-Lago.

The civilian aircraft entered the restricted area at approximately 10:50 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. NORAD aircraft responded as part of the air-defense mission supporting the presidential TFR.

The fighter pilot used a headbutt manoeuvre to attract the civilian pilot's attention. In an intercept, this involves the military aircraft moving close and crossing in front of the intercepted aircraft so that the civilian pilot can recognize the visual instruction and follow the fighter away from the protected airspace.

The manoeuvre worked. The civilian aircraft was safely escorted out of the restricted area. NORAD reported that the situation ended without further incident.

Unlike some earlier presidential-airspace interceptions, no flares were reported in this event. The headbutt manoeuvre itself was sufficient to establish the required response from the civilian aircraft.

A recurring air-defense task

NORAD said that since the January 20, 2025 presidential inauguration it had responded to more than 20 tracks of interest entering the Palm Beach TFR area. These incidents illustrate why temporary restrictions around presidential movements require constant monitoring.

The aircraft's registration and detailed flight information were not publicly released in the material used for the incident account. The reason the aircraft entered the TFR is therefore not established. What is established is the entry into restricted airspace, the F-16 response, the visual intercept and the safe escort out of the area.

The objective of the intercept was to restore compliance rather than escalate the situation. Once the aircraft responded to the fighter's visual instruction, the immediate security problem was resolved.
