FlightFollowerBlackjack-1 Scrambles to Unknown Airborne Target Inside Restricted Washington D.C. Airspace
On December 19, 2025, at approximately 20:50Z (3:50 PM local time), an active air defense response was initiated near Leesburg, Virginia, after an unidentified low-altitude target was detected within the Washington D.C. Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA). During a routine patrol southwest of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA), “Blackjack-1” notified air traffic control of the mission and maneuvered toward the reported target area near Rockville at approximately 3,000 feet.

In response to the situation, D.C. Air National Guard fighter aircraft were scrambled from Joint Base Andrews. At the same time, Potomac Approach requested assistance from nearby commercial traffic, with an ASH6115 flight crew reporting visual contact with a small white object south of Purcellville, though no further identification could be confirmed.
As a precautionary measure, departures from both KDCA and Baltimore/Washington International Airport (KBWI) were temporarily suspended for approximately 20–25 minutes while fighter activity continued in the region. Arrival operations remained active under adjusted routing procedures. By approximately 21:15Z, the situation had stabilized and Blackjack-1 returned toward KDCA.
Air traffic controllers later suggested the radar contact may have been a false target or possibly birds, with no confirmed threat identified.
